Being in front of the camera is never an easy job, especially for women. Hollywood likes to celebrate their natural beauty, but it can also be a cruel world for any that dare have a single flaw. This can be especially true for comediennes who have to contend in the often rough sport of making people laugh—whether in a blockbuster film or a rowdy bar. But while it may not be surprising that Kathy Griffin had plastic surgery, her honesty about the subject matter might be. While Griffin is not known for holding back, most beautiful women in Hollywood aren’t as honest. It could be, though, that she pulled a page from her idol, fellow comedienne and plastic surgery enthusiast, Joan Rivers.
Griffin’s first foray into plastic surgery came when she was just 26. The Illinois native was looking for an agent in Hollywood and believed her nose may be holding her back. Now she looks back and laughs at the idea of a comedienne needing to look like a model, but it’s tough to argue with the results—she does look good.
Many people have wondered if Kathy Griffin had plastic surgery to help slim down. The truth, though, is that Griffin has always had a slim frame. She was even on the cheer leading squad in high school, so her physique has constantly been toned as well.
However, Griffin has mentioned some extreme measures she took in the past to help take off some excess pounds. These have ranged from constantly exercising to burn calories to using diet pills in an effort to give her an edge. She claims she even turned to street drugs—speed to be exact—at one point to help her deal with pounds she didn’t feel she was able to burn off. The results weren’t encouraging though; she said it only made her hungrier when the high wore off.
While this is definitely not a good way to go, it’s understandable given the pressure she was under. Griffin got her big break with Suddenly Susan and immediately found herself in front of millions of Americans each and every week.
Given how honest Griffin has been about just about everything else in her life, it’s probably safe to assume she’s being honest here too.
That being said, as she got more and more famous (she had a show on the Bravo network), Griffin eventually turned to liposuction, a procedure that nearly killed her. Of course, being Kathy Griffin, she was honest about the fact and posted pictures online of what the procedure had originally done to her.
Nowadays, the 5’3 actress only weighs about 115 pounds. But she is adamant that the liposuction from a decade ago has nothing to do with it. Instead, she has diet and exercise to thank.
So, while Griffin has definitely had plastic surgery, her story is less than typical. For one thing, she’s completely honest about it. This includes some of the less savory details most people could learn a lot from.
